Comfrey - How to make a solution
Symphytum officinale

Growing Comfrey is easy but be careful it has resilient and very deep roots, so pot it, if you don't want it taking over. Even if you boil the root and disgard it into the compost it will regrow.
Grow it around the compost bins and add any excess leaves straight in.
I have developed the following steps in order to have comfrey ready to use at any time in my skin care lotions.

STEP 1
Comfrey leaves die back in winter so this is the best time to harvest the root.
Choose plants that are at least 2 years old if possibe.

The thicker the root the easier it is to to manage.

The roots are black and carrot like in shape.

Replant the left over roots as the plant will re-grow.

STEP 2
Wash the selected root pieces several times.

STEP 3
Peel off the black outer skin.
It is slippery to handle.

STEP 4
Chop into small pieces about the size of your small fingernail.
Then simmer in a small amount of water ( just covering the comfrey) for 10 mins.
Retain this fluid for later use in reconstituting the root powder. This makes it even MORE potent than just adding distilled water... or you could use a hydrosol too.

STEP 5
After crushing the sofened pieces, cut even smaller then dry on paper towel.
It becomes very hard once dried, hence the need for very small pieces.

STEP 6
Crush dried pieces in a coffee grinder. The put through a fine seive and re-grind any large particles.

Store comfrey powder in an airtight container in the fridge. This will easily last for the year.

STEP 7
When you need a powerful comfrey solution:
Add 5ml of powder ( re-seive it first)
to 200ml of either retained fluid, distilled water, or your favourite hydrosol, then mix quickly and VERY well.

A high speed blender really helps, otherwise it will immediately glob up!! so whisk fast.
Store your well labeled solution in the fridge, or freezer.
Always shake well and re-seive before use.You may alter the volume of powder according to what it is you're making.
Note: Don't be alarmed if the occasional tiny dark flecks emerge as it's so hard to remove minute dark particles.

TopTop

Happy Comfrey Use.
It's healing properties are quite amazing.
